PUT LIPSTICK

ON A PIG

"As a child I was always being told that I was ugly. So I thought up ways of beautifying myself. To have a face covered with flowers like a heavenly garden would indeed be a wonderful thing!"
~ Elsa Schiaparelli
The idiom “you can put lipstick on a pig” describes the act of making superficial changes to something ugly in an attempt to make it beautiful. The second part of the idiom, “...but it’s still a pig” is where our design ethos diverts. To us, the pig is the ugly, unwanted clothes we have gathered; and the lipstick is an excess of lace, ribbon and frill that takes over, giving lackluster clothes another chance of wearability and appreciation. At its core, the collection is a commentary on beauty and transformation. Our fashion house often talked about how clothes made us feel, with an attitude of “So what if I feel like a pig? I’m dressing up to make myself feel better.” Despite prevailing sentiments towards hyperfemininity, we believe that there is nothing wrong with embracing sartorial adornment as a means of empowerment.
